Get adequate sun exposure!!!
Dr.Charles Fuch's work on vitamin D is a wave of new studies on vitamin D.Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to a greater risk of autoimmune disease including type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. It has been linked to a doubling of heart attack risk among men,a 73% risk of dying from breast cancer, and a more frequent asthma attack among children.
"Vitamin D SEEMS TO BE VERY HELPFUL IN MAKING YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM DO WHAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO DO", said Dr.Tanya Edwards, director of Integrative Medicine at Cleveland Clinic.
The government recommends getting 200 to 600 international units (IU) of vitamin D a day.But those levels were set 13 years ago, many researchers now say far more is needed.
One of course can get vitamin D from the sun but exposing oneself to more than 15 mins of noon-day (apparently noon-day sun is best because it is directly above) would carry risks of skin cancer.Vitamin D can also be found from food and it would simply be crazy to think of getting 4000 or 5000 iu from this source. The best answer then must lie in supplements.
Doctors recommend patients first to get a blood test to determine just how deficient they may be.
Prof.Cedric Garland recommends the blood serum level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D should be 40 to 60 ng/mL for optimal disease prevention.
For Dr.John Douillard he thinks a better protection conferred would require the blood serum level to be 60 to 80 ng/mL.
And of course to achieve those levels most people would require 5000 to 6000 iu of vitamin D intake!
